Selecting a color
The color that you select for your kitchen cabinet paint is very important. If you start with the goal of sprucing up you kitchen and end up choosing a color as dull as the original, the entire exercise will be a waste of time. Blues and grays are the conventional cabinet and cupboard colors. But you can go a bit wild with orange, maroon, purple and even black, if the walls of your kitchen are bright enough.
But you have to make sure that the color matches the rest of the house and the existing wall color of the kitchen. Once the color has been selected, everything else is quite simple.

Type of paint
An oil based paint is recommended for kitchen cupboards. Such a paint sticks well to the surface of the cupboard and is easy to apply as well. Oil based paints are very easily available in the market and most of the good brands have them in a variety of shades.
Latex based paints may also be used for painting kitchen cabinets. They dry faster, but they are not as durable as oil based paints. It is also possible to use acrylic paints, but these are very expensive, and hence used only for painting smaller objects.

The painting process
Before you begin painting the cupboard or cabinet, it is important to give it through cleaning. Grease is the enemy of paint and all of it must be removed. When dried, you need to sand down the sides, coat it with a primer, and re-sand when dry. The primer helps the paint stick.
The next step would the application of the first paint coat. You can remove all the knobs and handles before painting. You can either remove the parts and paint one side at a time, or paint the cupboard as it is. You run the risk of drip marks this way, but you can avoid most of them if you are careful.
