Effective use of pendant lighting in the kitchen

Pendant lights are an important part of any kitchen. They contribute to the light source of the kitchen and can also be focused to specific parts of the kitchen that need extra illumination. The beauty of the kitchen is also enhanced with pendant lights if they are properly utilized.

Pendant lights come in various sizes, shapes and colors. Each type is designed to light the kitchen in a different way. They also come in different colors to blend with the color of the kitchen. Some types fit old-world kitchens while some fit modern kitchens. Whatever type of kitchen pendant used depends on the style of lighting adopted.

Task Lighting

This style is used when illuminating a specific segment of the kitchen which is mostly the heavy work zone. The pendant light chosen is one that produces minimal glare without comprising adequate lighting. An example of work zone in the kitchen is the sink area used for dishwashing. The height of the pendant light should be about 30 – 40 inches above the sink surface. For people who are much taller, the height should be adjusted accordingly. The main purpose of this is to get the pendant light out of the way.

Central Lighting or Ambient Lighting

Central lighting is done to illuminate the kitchen as a whole. It sets the mood and tone of the kitchen. It should also be borne in mind that the illumination of the kitchen should blend with that of the whole house. Because of the wider area central lighting illuminates, the pendant light used should be larger. The light source should not be obstructive. A good rule of thumb is to hang the pendant light at a distance of 60 inches from the floor for an 8-foot ceiling. Crystal chandeliers are good ambient light pendants.

Extra Lighting Areas

For kitchens with an eating space or a desk zone, special lighting may be applied to such areas. Notwithstanding, the lighting should suit the mood of the activity dedicated to such areas.

Choice of Shades

Shades can be used to alter the intensity and tone of the pendant light. Shades reduce direct light impact and thereby soften its intensity. Different types of shades are applicable to different lighting styles. For central lighting, mica shades can be applied. Glass shades give your kitchen a traditional look. Translucent-glass shades reduce distracting glare. Choosing the appropriate shade for your kitchen can go a long way in creating the desired look of your kitchen.
